What We Believe

It may help for you to see in a bit more detail what makes us tick. We are by no means perfect but we hope that what you read below reflects something of who we are as well as what we seek to become.

We are a Christian Church: We believe in one God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) who has revealed himself supremely through his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. To know God the Father, we must put our trust in his Son and his death on a cross for our sins. We believe that Jesus rose from the dead, ascended to heaven and one day will return again.

We believe in the person, the power and the ministry of the Holy Spirit as God’s gift to us until Jesus returns. We believe that the Holy Spirit gives his gifts to the Church to help us in our Christian lives and in our mission of reflecting God’s love in our church, local community and throughout the whole world.

We are an Evangelical Church: We believe that the Bible is God’s word, which speaks clearly and with relevance to our lives and modern world. The Bible is the definitive guide for us in all matters of faith and conduct.  We seek to apply the Word of God to every aspect of our lives. In order to do this we place a high value on preaching, teaching and studying God’s word together.

We are a Missionary Church: Because we believe that Jesus is ‘the way, the truth and the life’ and that noone can come to the Father except through him, we place a high value on sharing our faith both locally and throughout the rest of the world.  Our desire is to see people come to know Jesus and put their trust and faith in him.

We are a Contemporary Church: We try to function as a church in ways that communicate to our contemporary culture.  As well as seeking to apply the Bible to our lives today, we use a modern translation of the Bible in our services.  We make use of modern music styles as well as traditional hymns in our worship.  We have a worship group who help to lead most of our sung worship with a variety of instruments played.  We do not use hymn books, but use a projector and screen to display the words for our sung worship.

We are a Welcoming Church:  Although Fivehead is a Baptist Church, we have members from many different backgrounds and traditions.  Some people have been members of a church all of their lives, while others have become believers in recent years.  There are people who are still on a journey of discovering faith too. Everyone is welcome!

We are a Family Church: Everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, is welcome and is invited to feel at home.  During most morning services children and young people join us for the beginning of the service and then go to their own groups.

We are a Baptist Church:  We are members of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and the South West Baptist Association.  We subscribe to the Baptist Union Declaration of Principle:  The Basis of the Baptist Union is:

1. That our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, is the sole and absolute authority in all matters pertaining to faith and practice, as revealed in the Holy Scriptures, and that each Church has liberty, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to interpret and administer His laws.

2.  That Christian Baptism is the immersion in water into the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, of those who have professed repentance towards God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ who ‘died for our sins according to the Scriptures; was buried, and rose again the third day’.

3.  That it is the duty of every disciple to bear personal witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to take part in the evangelisation of the world.
